- Seller's Description:
- Fine in fine dust jacket. This mint and unusual, First Edition, First English translation HARDBACK edition, Paddington Press, 1977, has a mint, unclipped dust jacket that is now protected in an extra, bespoke, clear acid-free slipcover. This facsimile edition shows the original documents, together with its codicils, appended inventories, letters and instructions, preserved in the French National Archives. The cover is black cloth with gilt lettering to the spine. The end papers are a pencil sketch of Longwood, Napoleon's home on St. Helena. The book size is 8.5" w x 11.25" h with 112 pages. There are 12 black and white portraits of the legatees and some of Napoleon's personal items. ISBN 0-448-22190-X. ( Subsequently, in 1982, a book was published that is the perfect companion to this volume and which shows what killed Napoleon. "The Murder of Napoleon" by Weider, Ben & Hapgood, David, Robson Books, London, 1982, ISBN 0-86051-172-3. In chapters that alternate with the historical chapters, a 20th century detective is closing in on the killer. He is Dr. Sten Forshufvud, a Swedish expert on poison. Reading the memoirs of Napoleon's valet, Forshufvud realizes that Napoleon's symptoms are not those of stomach cancer, the most commonly cited cause of death, but of arsenic poisoning. But how to prove it? Arsenic leaves traces in the hair, so somehow Forshufvud must obtain hairs cut from Napoleon's head at various times during the exile. The hairs, if he can find any that are authentic will show exactly when the poisonings took place, and contemporary records will show who was always with Napoleon at those times....Readers will watch with fascination as Forshufvud, overcoming discouragements and opposition, ingeniously gathers his evidence. And they will look on with horror as, in the historical narrative, someone in Napoleon's entourage, posing as his friend, slowly poisons him." ( flyleaf ) Boudicca's Books. ) "'France, armée, tête d'armée, Joséphine....." These were the strangely moving, strangely revealing last words spoken by Napoleon Bonaparte as he lay dying on the isle of St. Helena in 1821. Ever since they have contributed to the popular heroic image of the man who commanded the loyalty of millions, conquered almost the whole of Europe and lost the woman he loved. But his will, reprinted here in facsimile and translated into English for the first time, throws fascinating new light on one of the most enigmatic and extraordinary figures in history. From the detailed lists of his shirts and snuff boxes to the distribution of millions of francs, from his bitter denunciation of the "English oligarchy and their hired assassin" to his fervent attempts to keep the Napoleonic legend alive through his son, THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT illustrates the contradictions of the Corsican turned Frenchman, the peti caporal turned Empereur, the man turned superman and, finally, man again. THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT, with commentaries by Jean-Pierre Babelon, Curator of the Museum of French History, and Suzanne d'Huart, Curator of the French National Archives, has been translated by Alex de Jonge, Fellow of New College, Oxford. He introduces this remarkable document with a concise and perceptive reappraisal of the man and his career." ( flyleaf )
