Written in 1863, immediately before "Brand" and "Peer Gynt", this was Ibsen's first real success in the theatre, and tells of the 13th-century struggle between two mighty rivals for the throne of Norway. Chris Hannan, the translator, is a playwright, author of "Elizabeth Gordon Quinn".
