- Seller's Description:
- Hardcover. Square octavo (8.437 x 6 inches). Not paginated (234pp + X blanks). Gilt embellished half black leather, over red fabric boards. "LIBER CCXX" lettered down spine in gilt, with single gilt rules at head and tail of spine. Housed in a plain black cloth slipcase. Black ribbon bookmark. This is copy no. 5 of a "limited hand numbered edition, " thought to have been no more than a dozen copies. Additionally, the publisher stated that "each copy is unique, " and while this is not expanded upon, it is said that the colour of the bindings varied. The Preface is attributed to someone who is simply represented by the glyph "ų". As the press is identified as the OE press, the glyph should presumably thus be read as the Scandinavian letter ų (which is an "oe" sound) rather than the numerous other meanings that the glyph has-or perhaps it is deliberately chosen for its multiplicity of meanings. This copy is quite possibly unique that it is INSCRIBED by the publisher, on the Preface page, where he has written "To Clive / lots of 93s / ų" [the ų in this case being stylized, perhaps indicative that it has a more personal and/or sigilic meaning]. In the Preface the publisher explains that "this edition of Liber AL vel Legis was typeset and produced as a single magical act; ". and notes that "certain features of the manuscript are incorporated in the present work (thereby presumably making it a hybrid of Liber CCXX with typeset parts of Liber XXXI). The book is printed throughout in red and black with one verse of each chapter of Liber AL to a page, with the type size varying according to the length of the verse. The first two pages are blank, p. (3) is the title page, which reads "Liber AL vel Legis / sub figura CCXX / as delivered by / XCIII=418 / to / DCLXVI / A: . A: . Publication in Class A." P. 4 has "Hand-bound by Paul Gill of Cambridge / Typesetting an layout copyright OE Press 1999 / This copy is number [number filled in by hand] in a limited edition, each copy being unique." P. (5) has the Tunis Comment (the "SU" of ANKH-F-N-KHONSU added by hand by the publisher to rectify a typo), p. (6) is blank, p. (7) has the publisher's Preface, p. (8) is blank and thereafter follows the text of "The Book of the Law." A lovely bright copy in Fine condition. Slipcase has a few very light marks from handling otherwise Fine. Very scarce.
