OK read...not very compelling story

Hard to see why readers find so fascinating or noteworthy this routine story of a young couple trying to make it in pre-WW II Germany. There's not much reference to the influence of Naziism. Lots of dialogue makes the story readable enough, but there's little action or suspense in it. Fallada's other book, Every Man Dies Alone, is far more interesting and exciting1
