classic dilemma of a bride's family

Spencer Tracy gives an outstanding performance of a dad who finds his daughter has seemingly grown-up overnight. She's in love, and he feels that he is no longer "the man" in her life. Besides the fact that he isn't particularly fond of her choice of a prospective husband, the costs of the wedding keep rising.
