An Essential for anyone with ADHD

I attended Dr. Amen's seminar named Inside ADD, I think, and first bought this book there. I then used it to add treatment strategies to the foster children's treatment plans for those kids on my caseload who had ADHD. I gave the foster parents copies of the chapters that pertained to the children placed in their homes. i used this book to help parents and foster parents understand that: 1) Trying harder makes the brain work less efficiently, so please do NOT instruct a child to try harder. And 2) Understanding what the brain is doing that instigates thoughts and behaviors IS THE STARTING POINT from which to plan any efforts to change. Why? Because efforts to change that do not include changes in brain chemistry will always be futile. It's like pulling weeds without pulling the roots. They just grow back.

I have given away so many copies of this book and am now buying it again because I need it in my library. If you are in a battle to change Impulsiveness, Obsessiveness, Anger, Depression or Anxiety, the information in this book is essential to your arsenal.

Great read even for a lay person

This was surprisingly easy to read and was made more interesting by the use of examples, and anecdotes from the author's practice and even his personal life.

It gives great insight into the workings of the brain and how what we consume - certain foods, drugs, alcohol etc. - affects brain function. It explains that our brains are essentially who we are and we should guard /protect the brain at all cost.
